Some People Probably Shouldn't Own Guns

Va. lawmaker who brandished AK-47 during legislative session was disbarred following assault, death threat
A Virginia lawmaker who drew gasps from his colleagues when he brandished a borrowed AK-47 during an anti-gun speech Thursday was found guilty in 2002 of committing a vicious 1999 assault, was sanctioned for legal misconduct while prosecuting a rape case, spent six months in jail for contempt of a federal court, and saw his law license revoked in 2003.

Democratic Delegate Joseph Morrissey brought the rifle to the floor of the House of Delegates to demonstrate how easy it is to carry firearms in Virginia. Republican Delegate Todd Gilbert interrupted Morrissey’s speech to ask him to remove his finger from inside the gun’s trigger-guard — a basic gun-safety practice...
One of the pushes in the current gun control kerfluffle is an attempt to restrict gun possession by people who may not be sane, or moral enough to handle them without harming innocents.  Perhaps a good rule of thumb should also be that people ineligible to own guns should be ineligible to  run for office as well.

UPDATE: Democrat lawmaker threatens rival
Assemblyman Steven Brooks was arrested Saturday night on a charge of threatening Nevada Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick.

State Sen. Kelvin Atkinson said Sunday he informed Kirkpatrick of Brooks' threat against her. Atkinson said Brooks had been telling people Kirkpatrick's "first day as speaker would be her last."

North Las Vegas police said Brooks, 40, was booked about 6 p.m. at the Las Vegas City Jail on a felony charge of intimidating a public officer by threat of physical violence. Jail records show Brooks was in custody Sunday evening.

Brooks is a Democrat serving Nevada Assembly District 17 in northern Clark County.

Police said they responded to a home in North Las Vegas at about 3:45 p.m. Saturday in response to reported threats to an elected official, though authorities would not say who Brooks reportedly threatened.
